Snacks

Snacks can be seen as extra, unneeded, unnecessary calories.  They can be viewed as something only school aged kids need after a long day in class and they can be thought of a meaningless way to get “junk food” into your body.

I don’t believe in any of that.  I believe and know snacks are an integral part of your daily intake.  Snacks help fuel your body between meals.  Your body doesn’t want to go more than 3-5 hours between eating.  When it goes too long without food your metabolism starts to slow down (we don’t want that).  Your body wants to know it will get food when it asks for it.  It wants to trust that you, the person in charge of fueling, will listen to the body and give it what it needs.

Choosing snacks can be an overwhelming thing for you.  And if it is believe me, you are not alone.  When you are at your desk at 3:30 and your stomach starts to grumble what are you to do?  Go to the vending machine?  Maybe.  If all you have at your disposal is a Snickers or some chips, that is fine.  Your body is asking for fuel and if you don’t eat you will be setting yourself up for a binge later that day (a binge that will add up to more calories than the candy bar or chips!).   If after a few days you are noticing you are regularly hungry at 3:30 you can start pre-planning your snacks and bring something to work.
